We suggest using PRICELINE, for all of your car rental deals. Be sure to negotiate your price for as low as possible. You would be surprised what you can get. ALWAYS ask for an upgrade, its shocking how easily car rental companies can be persuaded. Car rentals are the cheapest we have seen on the Big Island amongst all of the islands.

We flew into KOA which is the closest airport to the Hapuna Prince. We flew Mokulele from Maui on a prop plane.

While staying near the volcano we chose the Volcano Inn. We loved the room and also enjoyed the hot tub after a rainy day! There are mainly bed and breakfasts in this area. There is the Volcano Village where there are a lot of restaurants and a market. We also suggest looking into the Military Camp which is within the Volcano National Park. They have a bowling alley with great bar food and atmosphere if you want to lay low. We also think you may be able to stay there even if you are not military.

We drove up the Hilo side and headed to the Hapuna Prince Beach Hotel for a couple days which was quite relaxing.
